Frequently Asked Questions

We're here to make sure all of your questions are answered. You can find all of our most frequently asked questions below.

What is Permanent Makeup?

Permanent Makeup is a treatment also known as Cosmetic Tattooing. The process is very similar to that of a traditional tattoo, however with cosmetic tattooing we use different pigments and finer needles for a natural and realistic look. Using these products, we penetrate into a layer of the skin that will allow the tattoo to fade over time. As your skin is a living, breathing organ we desire the Cosmetic Tattoo to fade overtime (1-3 years) as this gives us the freedom to make changes to your look to something that is current and flattering.

How long does permanent makeup last?

To start your permanent makeup journey, you will need two treatments spaced 4-12 weeks apart. After your first treatment you will notice fading after the initial healing period of 20-40%. Everyone's skin is different and certain skin types will retain the pigment better than others. In your second treatment we will go over the whole process again, focusing on the more faded areas to ensure a beautiful look. The second treatment is also a perfect time to make any changes you desire in shape, colour or style.

What is a Feather Brow?

A feather brow is where we use the feathering technique, creating individual hair like strokes, which build up into a beautiful brow. Everyone's feather brow will be slightly different as we follow the hair growth of your own brow to create a look that is soft and natural.  This brow is suitable for anyone that wants extra definition and fullness whilst also looking natural.

What is a Powder/Ombre Brow?

A powder brow is where we use the shading technique throughout the full brow, softening slightly towards the bulb (front of the eyebrow). A powder brow creates a strong, full brow look and is suitable for those who are used to wearing brow makeup on a regular basis.

What is a Combination Brow?

A combination brow is a mixture of hair strokes and shading. Starting with hair strokes throughout to create a brow structure, then adding shading to give the brow depth and realism. We can add as little or as much shading desired to create a look that is very natural or very full. A combination is suitable for anyone lacking in their own brow hairs as the blend of both techniques result in a very realistic and flattering look.It can also be suitable for someone who wants a full fluffy brow look using hair strokes for shape and extra shading for density and colour.

How many PMU treatments will I need?

All permanent makeup treatments require two sessions to sufficiently provide enough pigment into the skin to last. This is NOT body art tattoo ink but a pharmaceutical, medical grade pigment made from glycerin and water with a powder compound designed to work its way out of your system over a period of time. The First session/treatment looks great, you will be overwhelmed with renewed confidence as you get used to your newly enhanced shape which forms the foundation for your amazing new look. Once healed they will have faded but don't fear this is normal, the base of the pigment is in and it means you're ready for your second pass. The Second treatment, called the top up, reinforces the colour and creates depth, thus providing a longer lasting result. Ideally the top up appointment is scheduled at 4-12 weeks after your first visit.

How should I prep for my PMU eyebrow appointment?

Please come to your PMU eyebrow appointment with well-groomed eyebrows. If you tweeze/wax your eyebrows make sure this is done at least two days before treatment. If you use electrolysis treatment this should not be done for a week prior. No botox around the eyebrow area at least two weeks before PMU procedure.

Does cosmetic eyebrow tattooing hurt?

Although permanent cosmetics and medical tattooing are a form of tattooing, the pain factor is considered to be less pronounced as these treatments are gentler and less invasive. Ultimately it really depends on each individuals pain threshold, some people can't feel a thing and find the treatment relaxing, whereas others experience slight pain. Do not panic, I do everything I can to ensure as much comfort as possible during treatment. I begin by applying a topical anesthetic cream to the skin for 10-20 mins before procedure, after each round of-tattooing I then apply an anesthetic ointment. This will ensure a numb treatment area as well as preventing any swelling that may occur during treatment.

How long is the PMU eyebrow treatment?

The allocated time slot for all styles of PMU eyebrows is 2.5 hours. This is also the same for the second top up treatment as ultimately it's the same procedure.

To begin the appointment we will sit down and have a consultation regarding the style, shape and colour you want to achieve. I will then apply your topical numbing cream, which will take about 15 minutes to take affect. In this time you will be asked to complete a short consent form, I will also talk you through the aftercare. Next I will map out your eyebrows using various measuring tools and techniques.

Once I have mapped your new brow shape I will then show you and this is where we can make any tweaks you desire for your new look. When you are happy with the shape it is time to begin the procedure! Using a machine and a very fine needle I will create your new eyebrows. I will numb the area throughout to ensure as much comfort as possible (some find it so relaxing they even fall asleep!). Once I am happy with the results I will sit you up to double check and mark out any tweaks if necessary.

Then you are all set with your new beautiful brows!

What is the difference between Cosmetic Tattooing and Micro-blading?

Cosmetic tattooing and Micro-blading both forms of Permanent Makeup. Even though they both produce similar outcomes the process is a lot different. Micro-blading consists of a hand held tool with a micro-bladed tip that the therapist will use to draw hair like strokes into the skin and then apply pigment. Here at Makeup by Mary we offer Cosmetic Tattooing. Instead of a hand held blade Cosmetic Tattooing consists of a machine and hand piece. The hand piece will have a nano needle attached that create finer strokes in comparison to a micro blade. The power of the machine will penetrate the needle in and out of the skin rather than dragging the skin open like micro-blading, meaning fewer traumas to the skin. The benefits of a machine are that the therapist can use the machine to control speed and depth of the needle ensuring ultimate control. A machine also gives the freedom of using different needles for different styles including shading.

Is it the same price for the first and second treatment?

Every PMU artist prices their treatments differently. Some require the full cost for both treatments up front, others ask for a more expensive first treatment but cheaper second. We price the first and second (top up) treatment the same as its ultimately the same procedure each time. We find this spreads the cost for our clients and also means when it comes to your annual top up you will only need to pay for one treatment at the fixed price.

What is Nouveau LVL?

The ultimate lash lift using your natural lashes. LVL stands for Length, Volume & Lift. To start the treatment I will lift your lashes from the root to create the appearance of longer and open lashes, a tint is also applied to create a thicker and fuller look.

How long does LVL last?

LVL can last 6-8 weeks. Tint top ups can be required 3-4 weeks after treatment.

As we use various serums and a tint for this treatment you must have a patch test at least 48 hours prior to treatment.

Do I need a patch test?
